If one is really committed to getting their financial act together, tracking every penny for 6 months is the minimum. This will capture some things that may not be daily, and highlight the items that seem like nothing, but add up over time. Random magazine purchases, for example. Most magazines offer an annual subscription that costs the same as 3 or 4 issues at the supermarket. That $5 every week ($260/yr) can quickly get converted into 4 subscriptions at $80-$100/yr total.
