There are some very simple steps we can all take to reduce energy consumption and wastefulness. Here are a few steps I’ve taken:

  • Use cloth napkins instead of paper
  • Use washable rags instead of paper towels
  • Turn off power strips when not in use
  • Unplug charges when not in use
  • Use junk mail envelopes to make lists/jot notes
  • Set the water heater setting the lowest we can handle
  • Keep the thermostat at 78 during the day
  • Replaced single panes windows with double pane
  • Run the dishwasher on the Water Miser cycle to conserve more water
  • Use Borax and other natural detergents as laundry boosters
  • Turn the lights off when we leave a room
  • Replaced our bulbs with compact fluorescences
  • Use vinegar to treat carpet stains instead of chemical solvents
  • Recycle newspaper, catalogs, milk jugs, bottles, cardboard, etc.
  • Upgraded HVAC to Energy Star approved 13SEER
  • Added additional insulation in our basement
